Emotional First Aid

How would you like to have a remedy for every uncomfortable emotion that comes up in your life? Sound too good to be true?

It may sound incredible, but it is true and verifiable.

Typically, when we think of first aid, our actions are needed when responding to minor injuries and emergencies having to do with the body. We are trying to “quiet” the body’s reaction to some trauma—stop the blood or swelling, restore breathing and heart rate to a more regular rhythm.

But when it comes to emotion, we turn away from that idea of dealing with it directly. There is any number of “solutions” that take us away from painful feelings:

  • Breathing through it, slowly, in and out

  • Work it out, at the gym, run, dance or yoga class

  • Be out, connect with nature in forest, park or garden

  • Inspire from within, meditate or pray

  • Get social, volunteer or involved in fellowship or hobby group

Please understand me. These are all excellent practices that have offer meaningful benefits. But “handling” yourself through an emotional experience is not the same as removing the emotion or its trigger. Coping with emotions can help us control the current reaction to a past reality. But indirectly dealing with emotions is a temporary solution. The next time the situation or environmental trigger appears, here comes the emotion again—often when least convenient.

If quieting emotions is not the answer, what is good emotional first-aid?

Rendering First-aid to emotions is about addressing the emotion directly.

If a triggered emotion is present in you, it is there because an unprocessed emotion lingers from some past high-stress event. We do not need to know any details about the origin or the name of emotion. All we need is to know that it exists and is present in us now. The current emotional experience is a direct GPS tracker to its emotional root.

Emotional Resolution®, EmRes®, works with the body to address emotions directly. Our bodies naturally know how to resolve emotions. Just as it knows how to heal a cut, bruise or sunburn every time it happens, our bodies know how to feel emotions, then dissipate them. But under some high-stress conditions, the body just does not have time to do this work. As a result, the emotion hangs around, unintegrated and later communicates its presence in us as a flaring body memory—physical sensations.

The EmRes method uses a process called viscero-somatic quieting. In a calm space where it can feel safe, the body will integrate the activated body memory. The obsolete subconscious connection between its environmental trigger and the physical sensations is updated. It is an easy but precise process.

EmRes session with a Professional reaches emotional events from the recent past –triggered emotions that did not or could not be captured in the moment. In-person, on the phone or via zoom, working on past events, the client shares just enough to bring up the moment just before the emotion, the body-memory is activated. The practitioner guides the client through the EmRes steps.

By working on emotions directly, emotional leftovers from the past high-stress event are integrated right away. The environmental trigger, whatever it was, will no longer stimulate the subconscious to activate a body memory.  The body memory is gone, permanently.
